1. Show contrast the right way

   Despite and in spite of show a surprise, but they need a noun.

   Despite và in spite of chỉ sự trái ngược, nhưng cần đi với danh từ.

2. The rule

   After despite, use a noun or an ing word. For a full clause, use although.

   Sau despite là danh từ hoặc động từ thêm ing. Muốn cả mệnh đề thì dùng although.

   • despite / in spite of + noun or verb-ing
   • although + subject + verb

3. An example

   The rain is a noun, so despite fits.

   The rain là danh từ, nên dùng despite được.

   • Despite the rain, we played football.

4. Watch out

   Do not put a clause after despite, and never say despite of.

   Đừng đặt mệnh đề sau despite, và không bao giờ nói despite of.

   • Despite it was raining -> Despite the rain
   • No 'despite of'
